Curriculum Vitae

Research/Teaching

I am a Marxist geographer interested in the linkages among social theory, social justice, geographic thought, and the research/practice nexus. In this latter regard, I consider the classroom (and pedagogy more generally) as a site for fundamental intervention for progressive social change. Through my various courses, I am especially concerned to have graduate and undergraduate students engage with theoretical frameworks and modes of analysis that enable a fundamental understanding of the main issues of concern to geographers and other scholars. My most sustained research interests are focused on the dismantling of the "common sense," taken-for-granted representations of "everyday" life.

Project Involvement

  • At the moment, I and a colleague at the University of Minnesota are preparing a new text/reader for courses in "Geographic Thought," to be published by Routledge. The book begins with the somewhat unusual question, "Is geographic thought good to think?" and then proceeds to an assessment of why and for whom.
