Curriculum Vitae
Research
My research interests are broadly centered upon human-environment interactions and the politics of managing tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia. For my dissertation work, I consider the role of forest certification as a policy instrument in achieving sustainable forest management in Malaysia. In particular, I investigate how 'science' is invoked during the formulation and implementation of forest certification standards and the degree to which 'expertise' is called upon to legitimate these decision-making processes. Moreover, I am interested the processes of knowledge production and the degree to which local (lay) knowledges are integrated with scientific (expert) knowledges to better inform decisions regarding natural resource management in the region.
Previously, my research focused on the degree to which global discourses surrounding sustainable development and biological conservation have permeated forest policy discourses in Peninsular Malaysia. Using a combination of content analysis and critical discourse analysis, I identified particular instances of global environmental discourses within the National Forestry Policy and identified how these shifts in language may influence the organizational structure of those involved with forest management in the country.
